Redressing History

Take a closer look at the complex and rich history of Protea Village

Only 12 of 28 hectares of dispossessed land could be restored to the Protea Village community in the settlement of their land claim. This is less than half the land they had lived on up until the mid 1960’s.

But the community has gone to great lengths to ensure that the greenbelt around the Liesbeek river will always be accessible to those who cherish it. They have dedicated a third of the land they received to public open space. These 4 hectares are located along the length of the river in a lush greenbelt of mature trees. This includes the area around the spring, which was once the main source of fresh water for the villagers.
